I remember working with young people on the streets in the same organisation as your brother Steve (Sidewalk). I was confronted by a very tall young guy. He started talking aggressively to me using one expletive after another. I felt uncomfortable and weak - my instinct was to move on as I was completely entitled to do but felt the impulse to stay and "be weak" with nothing to say. I can't remember there being an "as if" there but I wouldn't be doing the job if there wasn't - it was implied. Anyway, having decided to just be there in his presence, he suddenly broke down and cried and told me all his problems. It was a cathartic moment I'll never forget and taught me big lessons - learning to be comfortable with my uncomfortable-ness.
These truths are explored in his book the Strong and the Weak by Paul Tournier who claimed we are all weak but the strong cover up their weaknesses by being outwardly strong. This is more prevalent in the algorithmic control of social media where we gravitate towards the political strength a group brings and therefore rob ourselves of the potential that living in the "as if" would realise.
Yes again. As I am more conscious of careless words and assumptions when those of different abilities, ethnicities and experiences are in the space; the reminder of the empty chair to be as conscious of of words and assumptions for those who have not yet physically appeared in the space, is a furthering of community/humanity. It is a challenging erasure and a hopeful practice.

I been reading a few articles about a guy called Tom Sine who has just passed on he wrote the Mustard Seed Conspiracy like Illich a visionary and paid attention to detail there’s a cloud of witnesses out there it’s perilous to ignore them
