I’ve set up a crowd funder to replace my faithful old computer; a hobbling old thing at ten years of age.
A little more than a decade ago I was sat mixing my radiophonic folk musical, The Book of Jonah. It was an ambitious project, written and recorded over some years. I was on the final tweaks. Then all of a sudden the screen blinked and went black and then blue. After ten years, my old computer had come to its end. What of my radiophonic recording of Jonah? It was all gone.
I'm inclined to glance heavenwards at moments like this, and it seemed to me that a voice spoke words that said: “Well, it sounded like all your other records anyway.”
The happy story is that I was able to get hold of a new setup, and after a few years hiatus on the project I captured a far better recording of Jonah. This time I managed to persuade NT Wright to narrate, with none other than Alastair McIntosh playing the part of Jonah himself, fuelled with no small amount of whiskey.
It's been another ten years and my new set-up has become the old. We've made beautiful things together. The folk protest album Welcome the Stranger. The grief odyssey We Really Existed & We Really Did This. Hymns for Nomads Vols 1 & 2. And plenty of other records, including Jonah himself. Not to mention ambitious podcasts on civil disobedience, the anthropocene, and the messianic idea.
At this point I'm battling all kinds of glitches and the internet has mostly stopped talking to this poor old beast. I'm in need of a new set-up to continue my work as a creative contributing to this hour of re-imagination.
Here’s a crowd funder to make it possible. If you're able and inclined, I'm super grateful. Many thanks to you all.
